Catholic Charities and the Kankakee County Center Against Sexual Assault will launch a system-wide public education program to increase awareness of healthcare providers about elder and sexual abuse. Through a coalition that will serve as a resource of implementation for Kankakee’s healthcare providers, Catholic Charities looks to expand its extensive direct advocacy and counseling services and increase prevention and intervention. Utilizing partnerships with prominent cardiologists and the OB/GYN group practice physicians they plan to expand the “Just Ask” awareness initiative to community-based clinics, individual and group practices, the health department, schools of nursing, dentistry, and home healthcare providers. Catholic Charities will also work to promote state-wide information sharing and support of elder and sexual abuse prevention.

Macon County Safe From the Start has been administered by The Macon County Child Advocacy Center since July 2003. This program provides direct service to children, ages 0-5 and their families who have been exposed to incidents of domestic and community violence and who reside in the Macon County area. A full-time Children’s Therapist provides comprehensive therapy services to children and their non-offending primary family member, while a full-time Case Manager assesses and conducts overall case management. Local law enforcement agencies, DCFS, community agencies, and former clients identify and refer children to Macon County Safe from the Start. The Project Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and maintaining the Safe From the Start Macon County Coalition and community relations; conducts parenting classes and presentations on bullying, domestic violence, media violence, child abuse, keeping kids safe and others; and oversees the daily activities of the program. In addition, this program provides parenting classes, volunteer opportunities with The Neighborhood Crisis Response Team, and also works together with a coalition of Macon County service providers to increase public awareness about the impact of violence on children and their development.

The Children’s Foundation of Children’s Home & Aid received a Safe From the Start planning grant in July 2007. This agency has been providing direct services to children and families in McLean County for over 118 years. This site has begun to organize a coalition by collaborating with thirteen primary community partner agencies and six secondary partners incorporating mental health service providers, law enforcement, domestic violence agencies and child advocacy groups. The Safe from the Start Program Coordinator will manage the coalition activities to conduct a community needs assessment and develop a strategic plan to coordinate a community response to identify, intervene, and respond to children impacted by violence. The coalition of partners aims to identify disparities in existing community resources, services, and policies and procedures of McLean County, train the primary partners about the effects of childhood exposure to violence on early development, plan a public awareness campaign, an effective outreach system, an evaluation process to asses children and their families, and establish more comprehensive clinical and family support services in the county.
